LASS is an amateur astronomy group made up of members of our local area that include Stephenville, Mineral Wells, Granbury, and Lipan. One of our objectives is to share our mutual interest in astronomy with anyone in our area that enjoys observing the night sky and the wonders that are found there. Another major objective is to bring an awareness of astronomy to students in our local schools.
There are no hard and fast rules concerning membership in LASS and the experience level of our members ranges from inexperienced to avid amateur. The club has recently been blessed with the addition of several new members and some mighty fine telescopes. Currently the largest is a 20" Obsession DOB and a scattering of just slightly smaller DOB's. Throw in 3 or 4 Schmidt-Cassegrain's and you can see LASS is into the observing scene. There is no requirement for anyone to own a telescope or other observing equipment however, a secondary objective of LASS is to generate enough interest in its members to cause them to want to purchase a personal telescope.
Membership in LASS is free to anyone desiring to associate themselves with the local club. There are no monthly or yearly dues and members are not required to attend any gatherings scheduled by the club. For purposes of associating with other astronomy organizations, a formal membership roll will be maintained.
LASS is affiliated with the national organization "NIGHT SKY NETWORK". This organization is sponsored by NASA and the JET PROPULSION LAB. Night Sky Network provides training aids and educational materials to local astronomy clubs to use in their efforts to raise public awareness in amateur astronomy.
